Miners enter the abandoned Makala mine shaft close to Mongbwalu in north eastern D.R.Congo to look for gold-bearing ore deep undrground.They are forced to walk upto 3 KM waist deep in water down disused shafts left behind by mining companies who fled during the countries civil war. Each miner will carry asack of rocks back to the surface which are then broken down in the search for flecks of gold. The mine was first opened in 1948 during Belgium's colonial reign.
