Artisanal Miners sift through the tailings in the shadow of an abandoned processing plant in Kanga, outside Mongbwalu, north-eastern DRC..The tailings are bits of stone and silt left over from the refinery process. This processing plant was the central refinery for gold found in Ituri province. Even during the war it was pushing out 10-20 kilos of gold per month. .The shell of the buildings and the waste left behind are all that remain the company fled during the war. Since being abandoned in 2001 anything that could be carried away and used elsewhere or sold as scrap has disappeared..
