Artisanal Miners sift through bits of stone and silt left over in abandoned gold mines in north-eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
The small amounts of gold found are sometimes enough to feed families. Other times no gold is found and the days labor is for naught. The miners work independently and without any protections and often suffer debilitating injuries.
