Portrait of Congolese miner at Makala Mine. The colonial era mine was abandoned and is now exploited by independent miners who chisel out rocks from the walls of many of the tunnels. many walk and work in waist deep waters for as long as 24 hours before emerging with the stones that they hope will have gold in them.
