The abandoned Makala mine shaft close to Mongbwalu in north eastern D.R.Congo where independent miners go to look for gold-bearing ore deep undrground. They are forced to walk upto 3 KM waist deep in water down disused shafts left behind by mining companies who fled during the countries civil war. Each miner will carry a sack of rocks back to the surface which are then broken down in the search for flecks of gold. The mine was first opened in 1948 during Belgium's colonial reign.
